Toddlers in Tiaras

This show is ridiciulous! It is basically teaching girls to only worry about their looks and dance moves starting at such young ages. Has anyone else seen this show? Its teaching these girls to be vein at such a young age. I know that people who have participated in pageants say that there is an underlying purpose of making this a well-rounded women and I cannot disagree with that since I have never participated but I just think that this girls are too young to be worrying about losing and disappointing their moms. Most of these mothers are living through their little girls and trying to win something they wanted as a child and never got.

Blogging out of Frustration

This past week I went to the movies at Showplace 16. At the time it was 10pm and when I was getting out of the car I saw a black couple walking into the theatre with a car seat that had in it probably not any older than 2 month old baby. My first reaction was I cannot believe they are bringing that baby out to a theatre this late at night. But then I thought, who am I to judge I cannot even imagine being home all the time. Well when my boyfriend and I walked into to get our tickets, this couple was right in front of us. This is when a white man came up to the couple and said "I am sorry but our theatre policy is that we do not allow anyone in the theatre under 7 years old after 9 pm" and the women said "Are you f-ing kidding me, he's an infant, he cannot even talk!!" and the man continued to apologize and said it was their policy and there was not anything he could do. She then responded with "That's why I hate f-ing white people" and walked away saying things I could not hear. I was disgusted, why did she have to take it to a race issue. It had nothing to to with the color of her skin it was the theatre's policy!

Heywood's responses

I wanted to talk about how Heywood's responses to Lily's questions changed people's view point of her. I think this is because it made her look and seem more like a person than a selfish character in her book. I appreciated when she said "I would develop the characters more than having the book be all about me me me." I kind of think that this changed the book all together for me. I wonder how the book would be if it was not all about her?

Gender Roles

Girls wear pink, boys were blue. Girls wear dresses, boys wear pants. Girls play with dolls, boys play with trucks. Girls cheer and dance, boys play and get dirty. But when did it begin that a gender role for girls to act like completely horrible to one another. Girls are so mean to eachother that they even felt that it was appropriate to make a movie out of it for humor. I know every girl has experienced it, even if they were the ones at one point were the girls that I am talking about. I have had conversations with friends that you know how good you look on a Friday night not by how many guys come and talk to you but my how many dirty looks you get from the other girls that are at the same establishment. Does anyone agree with me? Why is it like this? Do you think boys have to deal with the same thing that girls do?

30 Rock

One of the things about equality is not just that you be treated equally to a man, but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man. ~Marlo Thomas

This quote reminded me about what you spoke about in class after watching Tina Fey in 30Rock. There is definitely a double standard for women. In the workplace, women are expected to be just as smart if not smarter than her male co-worker. Because if she is not, the company should have hired a male to do the job. ON THE OTHER HAND, when a male is forceful and pushy in the work place it is the norm but when a women is forceful and has high standards of her employees, this is seen in a negative light and is frowned upon by all the co-workers.

Iron Jawed Angels

I thought this was the most powering movie I have seen in quite a long time. At first I thought this movie was going to be boring talking about the Women's movement but boy was I wrong. By the end of the movie I was sitting on the edge of my chair routing for the women.

My favorite part of the whole movie was when the authorities began arresting every woman who stood up for the Suffrage. There was this power that overcame my body when each of the ladies in jail refused to eat their food so that could prove their point.

This movie made me question myself. Would I have been one of the leaders or volunteers in the Suffrage? Or would I have been sitting on the sidelines when other women fought for my freedom? I wanted to know what your opinion was and if you thought you would be a leader or if you would be on the sidelines?

Pretty good for a girl

This book was most likely my favorite book that I have been assigned throughout my four years at Saint Mary's College. I know that there are some people that were not able to connect to this book as much as others, but I am sure if you think of it you can. Think of something in your life that you wanted more than anything in the world, something that you worked so hard for but you fell short of your own expectations. When Heywood was told by her doctor that she had to give up her lifetime dream and something that she worked most of her life for, I felt heartbroken for her. When she was receiving this news I could actually feel myself tightening up in fear of how she was going to react. I could not even imagine how I would react to this type of news. I was surprised to how well Heywood took the news and put her energy into Body Building. At first I was afraid she was over doing it in this sport, too. But I believe by the end of the book she became a stronger person in more ways than one.Last class period the question was brought up if we believed this was actually a Feminist Memoir or not. Throughout the book I could not see how this was a Feminist Memoir, I actually thought the complete opposite. That was until I got to the Epilogue and she told the readers why she was writing this book. Now, I can see how this is a a Feminist Memoir and how powerful it was at that.

Unconventional

This is one of those "hard to put down" books. I find myself so interested in her life because it is the complete opposite from mine. Growing up I have always seen the man being more dominant in the relationship and the women being conservative. However, it was weird to me how her mother let her kind of walk all over her. It seemed to me that her mom never told her "no" that she was able to do whatever she felt like doing. At first, I was jealous of the type of relationship she had with Daryl. I first felt this way when she told him she could not marry him and his reaction was not angry but a solution. Later in the book though, i felt like he was a push over and would start to get on my nerves.I was happy to see that by the end of the reading her parents relationship grew stronger between themselves and with her. I feel that it is truly important for a child to have a good relationship their parents and when they do not, in my own experience, (just a theory/opinion, not saying always) I feel like it will be harder to connect with their children later in life. I am excited to continue reading and to see what happens next.

Graphic Writing

When I first opened this book, I was pretty excited to start to read since I have never even seen this writing style before. At first I could not connect with the book because, unfortunately, I did not know much about this issue. However, after getting knee deep in the reading, I thought that I could connect with Marji. Not because I went through anything even close to what she experience but I have also felt out of place and trying to fit in even when I knew my family would be disappointed with the person I was fighting to be. I was so proud of her when she finally got out of this stage of "caring". I think she then started to become some one she was more proud of. In the end, I was kind of upset for her that her marriage did not work out because she seemed to have such a hard time finding love so I was really cheering for her when she first found him at the party. Nevertheless, I was happy to see that she went back to Europe to become the independent woman that we all knew she was from the time she was young.

Quotes

A quote caught my eye today that I really liked and I just wanted to share it with all of you...

"Women are like teabags. You never know how strong they are until you put them in hot water." -Eleanor Roosevelt.

This quote reminds me of my mom. She is probably one of the strongest women I know but it never truly shines until something goes wrong.
